Learn why men and women in Virginia Beach trust the surgical expertise of board-certified plastic surgeon
Dr. Thomas Hubbard.
People who are concerned with facial wrinkles, folds, poorly defined facial contours, hollowing around the eyes, or loss of youthful volume can benefit from dermal fillers in Virginia Beach. Individuals with lines around the mouth or thin, "deflated" lips can also use dermal fillers to increase the volume in these areas. If you're bothered by certain nasal irregularities, such as asymmetry or a nasal hump, dermal fillers may be a satisfactory solution instead of surgery. Learn more about nonsurgical rhinoplasty.
At Hubbard Plastic Surgery, we offer some of the most advanced and popular dermal fillers on the market. During your consultation in our Skin Enhancement Center, our experienced, licensed skin care professionals will help you choose from the following options:
Restylane has earned FDA approval and is effective in reducing moderate to severe folds and wrinkles on the face. With many years of use and more than 10 million treatments in more than 65 countries, Restylane has an unparalleled safety record. Because it is made from hyaluronic acid, a molecule that occurs naturally in our skin, allergy testing is not required. Restylane is a clear gel that is placed in or just beneath the skin following a topical local anesthetic, and Lidocaine is added to the Restylane to further increase patient comfort during treatment. Discomfort after treatment is minimal; however, redness or swelling may occur for 2 to 5 days. Results typically last 5 to 9 months, and in some areas of the face such as below the eyes or around the nose, we may see up to a year of effectiveness. Restylane is a great filler for nasolabial folds, tear troughs, and lips. Here's a breakdown:
Restylane® Lyft with lidocaine, formerly marketed as Perlane-L®, is an injectable gel used to increase volume and smooth wrinkles in the face. It is FDA approved for cheek augmentation and correction of age-related midface contour deficiencies in patients over the age of 21. It is also FDA approved to correct and smooth the nasolabial folds ("smile lines"). The most common adverse events after initial treatment include bruising, redness, swelling, pain, headache, tenderness, and itching. Restylane Lyft with lidocaine should not be used in people with a known allergy to lidocaine, or people with severe allergies and bleeding disorders. This FDA approval marks the fifth major indication in the U.S. for the Restylane® family of products. Learn more:
Restylane Silk is a smooth, transparent hyaluronic acid (HA) gel that can be injected into the lips or the area around the mouth. Similar to other areas of the face, the lips and area surrounding the mouth also show signs of aging as an individual gets older. This often results in lip thinning, lost shape and/or an increase in vertical lines above the lip. Restylane Silk is injected via an ultra-fine needle that is designed to enhance precision and minimize patient discomfort. Restylane Silk is composed of a unique, refined formulation for precise lip shaping and line control, and can help restore natural definition and symmetry and smooth wrinkles. Aging lips can also result in the flattening of the V-shaped area of the upper lip ("Cupid's bow") and the downward turn of the corners of the mouth. After treatment, swelling, tenderness, bruising, pain, or redness may occur. These side effects are typically mild in severity and normally last fewer than 7 days. Learn more:
JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus XC is a smooth, injectable gel with lidocaine that adds volume beneath the skin using hyaluronic acid, a molecule that occurs naturally in our skin. Water binds to these molecules, creating much of the volume we associate with youthful faces. As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid present in our skin begins to decrease, contributing to loss of volume and formation of wrinkles. JUVÉDERM provides a smooth, natural look and feel and is the first FDA-approved dermal filler to be proven safe and effective for darker skin tones. JUVÉDERM is a great treatment for fine lines and a natural lip volume. The Ultra Plus formulation is a thicker gel used for folds and creases around the nose and mouth. Patients may see a small amount of redness or swelling after treatment that subsides within a few days. Here's more information:
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC belongs to the JUVÉDERM family of injectable gel fillers and uses a hyaluronic acid formulation similar to JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus XC.. However, this filler is specifically designed to add volume to the cheek area and is one of the first hyaluronic acid fillers to be FDA-approved for this purpose. Moderate side effects may be experienced for 2 to 5 days after injection, including swelling, redness, and bruising. Results may last up to 2 years with appropriate correction. Here's a breakdown:
Sculptra Aesthetic is not a fast-acting injectable gel filler, but rather a series of injectable, wrinkle-reducing treatments using a synthetic, biodegradable material called poly-L-lactic acid. This is the same material used to make the dissolvable sutures frequently used in surgical procedures; it has been used for decades, and its ability to safely absorb into the body is very well established. This series of treatments is designed to address moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and correct facial fat loss by gradually helping your skin regrow its own collagen. It has been FDA-approved for these purposes. Treatments are typically administered about 3 weeks apart, and patients may experience swelling, redness, and bruising around the injection site for a few days after treatment. Results typically last 2 years but have been known to last longer. Learn more:
A topical anesthetic will be applied to maximize comfort during injection. The filler is injected into the treatment area using a very fine needle. Adding the local anesthetic lidocaine to your filler will further improve comfort during treatment. Our skilled skin care expert Denise Kail strategically administers the correct amount to create a natural appearance.
Dermal fillers require almost no downtime. Some redness, swelling, and a small amount of bruising at the injection site may occur during the first few days following treatment, but these symptoms are minor and subside quickly. Results are apparent after the first week for most injectables, with benefits lasting several months.
In our practice, we have seen enhanced results when injectable fillers are used in combination with wrinkle reducers such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN®.
The FDA approval of injectable fillers for the face has allowed cosmetic surgery to expand beyond traditional surgical options. We now have an array of powerful new weapons in our fight against the folds and wrinkles that occur with aging. These new fillers provide us with a non-surgical way of smoothing, filling, and softening wrinkles and depressions of the face. As our patient photos illustrate, they can have a dramatic improvement in filling lines around the mouth, plumping the corners of the mouth to elevate the marionette lines and augmentation of the lips. Dermal fillers can also be used in conjunction with facial surgery to obtain a more youthful appearance.
Current FDA approval includes moderate to severe facial wrinkles and localized fat loss in the face. However, there are clearly many other safe and effective uses of dermal fillers that are known as "off-label." In our opinion and experience, however, these "off-label" uses are very safe and offer exciting results. For instance, a common off-label use for injectable fillers is as a treatment for hollowing under the eyes. Many women are bothered by dark "tear troughs" or under-eye areas and are surprised to learn the problem is often unrelated to skin pigment. An area of hollowness or fat loss can create an obvious shadow beneath the eye. By plumping the depressed area with filler, the shadow is reduced and the dark circles are greatly improved. Filler in this area can last more than a year.
Plumping of the lips with filler is another very exciting application. In our opinion and experience, the safety and satisfaction rate with this procedure is higher than any other type of lip enhancement and is a great option for patients who desire fuller lips. Many women are amazed at how subtle the changes to the lips can be. Plumping the mouth corners to elevate the marionette lines is another very effective but less-common use of dermal fillers.
