Is Lip Enlargement for Me?

Lip enlargement is effective for adding volume to the lips as well as reducing vertical wrinkles or "smokers' lines" around the mouth. This procedure is also used to correct asymmetrical or misshapen lips and can provide a more youthful appearance overall.

During Your Procedure

Denise will tailor your treatment to your aesthetic tastes and individual physical characteristics. The treatment area is usually numbed using a topical anesthetic for increased comfort. Denise will then inject small amounts of the filler into several specific areas. The degree of enhancement is easily adjustable. Patients are able to gauge their progress and control their treatment by periodically viewing changes in the mirror.

Recovery and Healing

Lip enhancement requires little to no downtime and has very few associated risks. Usually, the most common side effects include minor bruising, swelling, and redness at the injection site, which usually lasts only 4 to 5 days. Stopping aspirin products (if approved by your family physician) four days prior will help decrease bruising. Full results appear over the next few weeks as the swelling subsides and the effects last 5 to 9 months.

A Complete Makeover

Many people use BOTOX® Cosmetic or other injectable fillers such as JUVÉDERM to smooth wrinkles between the eyebrows, along the forehead, and around the eyes.

You May Also Need To Know

Restylane is now a preferred treatment for lip enhancement. With many years of experience and use by millions of patients for a variety of facial areas worldwide, it has an unparalleled safety record.

Restylane is comprised of hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the human body. Therefore, no allergy testing is required. The hyaluronic acid is not obtained from animal or human sources. The FDA approval of Restylane has presented us with an extremely safe filler for deep folds and wrinkles on the face.

Because of its success in filling and plumping beneath the facial skin surface, Restylane's applications were extended to lip augmentation. Using Restylane for lip enhancement is considered "off label"; the FDA leaves this type of use to the judgment of the practitioner.

Fat Transfers

Another option for lip augmentation is using the patient's existing fat tissue as the plumping material. While it may seem preferable to use one's own tissue, the results are not as predictable. Fat injections are easily done on an outpatient basis, although there is usually considerable swelling for 1 to 2 weeks. Local anesthetic is injected into the lips prior to the procedure, as well as another area of the body from where the fat graft will be taken. Some patients have a very high success rate, meaning that the results are long-lasting and sometimes permanent, but others experience more short-lived effects – sometimes only 2-4 months. Dr. Hubbard has found a much higher rate of permanent augmentation when the fat injections are performed with other facial cosmetic procedures and the patient "rests the lips" several weeks during recovery at home.
