Learn why men and women in Virginia Beach trust the surgical expertise of board-certified plastic surgeon
Dr. Thomas Hubbard.
People who are concerned with wrinkles, grooves, poorly defined facial contours, or hollowing around the eyes or in the cheeks can benefit from dermal fillers in Virginia Beach. Individuals with lines around their mouth or thin, "deflated" lips can also use dermal fillers to increase the volume in these areas.
At Hubbard Plastic Surgery, we offer some of the most advanced and popular dermal fillers on the market. When you visit our office, you can choose from the following options:
Restylane® has earned FDA approval and is effective in reducing deep folds and wrinkles on the face. With many years of use and over 10 million treatments in more than 65 countries, Restylane has an unparalleled safety record. Because it is made from the natural substance hyaluronic acid, allergy testing is not required. Restylane is a clear gel that is placed in or just beneath the skin following a topical local anesthetic. Discomfort is minimal; however, redness or swelling may occur for 2 to 5 days. Results last 5 to 9 months. In some areas around the face such as below the eyes, we commonly see up to a year of effectiveness. Restylane is a great filler for nasolabial folds, tear troughs and lips that need more projection.
Perlane® is in the family of Restylane products. This dermal filler restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles or folds. Perlane is an excellent filler to lift the lip corners also known as the marionette lines or M-lines. Restylane and Perlane can be used in the same patient. The hyaluronic acid in both products is made by the same biotechnical process, but the difference is in the gel particle size. Denise will help you decide which solution is right for you.
RADIESSE® is another type of injectable filler that is used for facial lines and wrinkles. It contains the natural substance calcium hydroxylapatite and works great for filling deep nasolabial folds and the cheeks. The results with RADIESSE usually last 10 to 18 months in some patients. However, redness, swelling or bruising can last for 7 to 12 days. Our skin care director, Denise Kail, RN, can provide makeup to help with any discoloration.
JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is smooth gel that plays a vital role in adding volume beneath the skin with hylauronic acid, which is a natural part of our skin. JUVÉDERM provides a smooth, natural look and feel and is the first FDA-approved dermal filler that has been proven safe and effective for darker skin tones. JUVÉDERM is a great treatment for fine lines and a natural lip volume. The Ultra Plus formulation is a thicker gel used for deeper folds and creases.
This procedure does not require anesthesia; however, a topical anesthetic may be applied to maximize comfort. The filler is injected into the treatment area using a very fine needle. Some fillers are formulated with the local anesthetic lidocaine to improve comfort during treatment. Our skilled skin care expert Denise Kail strategically administers the correct amount to create a natural appearance.
Dermal fillers require almost no downtime. Some redness or swelling may occur during the first few days following treatment, but these symptoms are minor and subside quickly. Results are apparent after the first week for most injectables, with benefits lasting several months.
In our practice, we have also seen enhanced results when Restylane is used in conjunction with BOTOX® Cosmetic for smoothing fine lines around the lips and between the brows. Dermal fillers can also be used in combination with facelift surgery to obtain a more youthful appearance.
The FDA approval of injectable fillers for the face has allowed cosmetic surgery to expand beyond traditional surgical options. We now have some powerful new weapons in our fight against the folds and wrinkles that occur with aging. These new fillers provide us with a non-surgical way of smoothing, filling and softening wrinkles and depressions of the face. As our photos illustrate, they can have a dramatic improvement in filling lines around the mouth. Dermal fillers can also be used in conjunction with facial surgery to obtain a more youthful appearance.
Current FDA approval includes moderate to severe facial wrinkles and localized fat loss in the face. However, there are clearly many other safe and effective uses of dermal fillers that are called "off-label" but in our opinion, are very safe and offer exciting results. One of these uses is treatment for dark circles under the eyes. Many women are bothered by dark circles, also called "tear troughs," and are surprised to learn the problem is unrelated to skin pigment, but rather an area of hollowness that results in obvious shadow beneath the eye. By plumping the tear trough area with filler, the shadow is reduced and the dark circles greatly improved. Filler in this area can last more than a year.
Plumping of the lips with filler is another very exciting off-label use. In our opinion, the safety and satisfaction rate with this procedure is higher than any other type of lip enhancement and is an exciting option for patients who desire fuller lips. Many women are amazed at how subtle the changes to the lips can be. We prefer a natural look and at times, this may mean only a tiny amount since more can always be added later. Our certified nurse injector, Denise Kail, is patient and caring. She wants to understand each individual's particular goals and wishes. She is precise, gentle and truly an artist and master at injecting the lips.
