Is Breast Augmentation for Me?

Women who are dissatisfied with their breast size or who feel that their breasts are uneven may want to consider breast augmentation surgery. Augmentation can increase the fullness and projection of the breasts, and the procedure is popular among women after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

During Your Procedure

Breast augmentation surgery is most commonly performed with the patient under general anesthesia. A saline or gel implant is inserted beneath the underlying chest muscle through an incision around the lower edge of the areola or beneath the breast. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that patients can go home the day of their surgery.

Healing after Surgery

Dr. Hubbard offers women who visit him from in and around Hampton Roads for breast augmentation a "Rapid Recovery" approach. This method applies a number of recent advancements in surgical techniques and post-surgery care. During the procedure, he uses a very accurate and delicate approach, resulting in less trauma to the tissues.

The use of several types of anti-inflammatory medications during and after surgery can also help ease discomfort and speed recovery. Dr. Hubbard encourages an early start to arm motion following surgery in order to reduce shoulder stiffness. This carefully planned approach allows for a comfortable and quick recovery with less need for pain medication.

A Complete Makeover

Women who also want to improve the position of their breasts may want to consider a breast lift in addition to breast implants. Many women also choose liposuction or a tummy tuck in addition to breast surgery for overall body reshaping benefits.

You May Also Need to Know

Capsular contracture is the potential complication of breast enlargement that most concerns women considering the procedure. Dr. Hubbard has implemented several precautionary measures that help prevent this condition, which causes hardening of the breast. These measures can be referred to as "no-touch" techniques. They include touching the implant with fresh, clean gloves and immediately coating the surface of the implant with antibiotics. This results in increased safety for the patient and a soft, natural result.

Some women who have had breast augmentation elsewhere seek the help of Dr. Hubbard to perform revision breast surgery. One common type of revision surgery called "capsulorraphy" involves repositioning breast implants to create a more natural position. (See this photo gallery case example for a patient who was dissatisfied with her initial result from another surgeon because her implant pockets were placed too low.)

Other common types of breast revision surgeries include lowering the implants, correcting capsular contracture, changing breast implant size or type, and performing a variety of breast lift procedures with or without implants in place.

Implant Options

Both saline and gel implants are available in a variety of profiles. Gel implants feel very natural and their rupture rate is considerably less than in years past thanks to thicker, more cohesive gel. Saline implants will remain a preferred choice for many women, however, because of their long history of use and very high patient satisfaction.

With the greater number of breast implant choices available, a thorough consultation and examination with Dr. Hubbard is more important than ever. Dr. Hubbard customizes his procedures based on chest width, breast and body size, presence of sag, and personal goals to achieve individualized results.

Breast Augmentation in Athletes

For over 10 years, Dr. Hubbard has been a strong advocate of implant placement beneath the pectoralis muscle, even in athletes. Body builders, runners, and others with active lifestyles can benefit from the advantages of subpectoral placement, including:

  • Better breast shape
  • More padding and less likelihood of rippling
  • Less likelihood of capsule contracture (hardening of the breast)
  • Better quality mammograms

Weight lifters will find that during muscle contracture, the breast will change shape. However, Dr. Hubbard has performed this surgery on many women weightlifters who easily returned to their routine workouts. Please visit our photo gallery page to see examples of breast augmentation.
